Arnaiz Residence
Makati City
Haligi ng Dangal Awardee
A modern interpretation of the bahay na bato, a distinctive Filipino structure, the Arnaiz Residence is a three-story home in Makati that stays true to the bahay kubo's architectural essence and is built to withstand the tropical climate and earthquake-prone environment. The design presents answers to tropical architectural challenges such ventanillas, lengthy roof eaves, and elevated living areas. Ventanillas are placed beneath the main fenestration to allow for natural ventilation and create shadow patterns mimicking the local weaving art of paghahabi, the long roof eaves offer adequate shade to lower the temperature, allowing less reliance on artificial cooling, and the structure is lifted from the ground for flood protection. Classical and contemporary materials such as travertine tiles, steel cut-outs, and glass were used for a modern Filipino aesthetic that is authentic and faithful to its roots.
